What pallets is worth

Pallets are sold by the unit, not by weight, and the value is in the type and the condition. Sound Euro pallets (stamped EPAL) are the most sought after, standard UK pallets in good repair come next, and odd sizes and one trip pallets are worth little. A pallet recycler pays for pallets it can resell or repair, collects repairable ones free, and charges for broken or mixed loads that can only be chipped for board or biomass. Regular supply matters: a warehouse that produces a steady number each week is worth a recycler setting up a round for.

Types of pallet

Count by type before you ask, because buyers price each type separately.

TypeWhat it isNotes
Euro pallet (EPAL)1200 by 800 mm, stamped EPAL or EUR on the blocksThe most sought after; sound ones fetch the most
UK standard pallet1200 by 1000 mm, four way entryWidely wanted in good repair
Heat treated (ISPM 15)Any pallet stamped HT with a country code, for exportWanted by exporters; keep them apart
CP and chemical palletsHeavy pallets from the chemical industry, marked CP1 to CP9Specialist buyers
One trip and odd sizesLight pallets and unusual sizesLow value; often collected rather than bought
Broken palletsMissing or split boards, broken blocksRepairable ones collected free; the rest chipped, often for a charge

How to prepare pallets for sale

  • Sort by type and size and stack them straight, up to a safe height, so a buyer can count and lift them.
  • Keep them dry and off wet ground; rotten or mouldy boards make a pallet scrap.
  • Pull off plastic strapping, stretch wrap, cardboard and nails that stick out.
  • Note the stamps: EPAL, EUR, HT and CP marks change what a pallet is worth.
  • Say how many you have, how many you produce a week, and whether a lorry with a tail lift or a forklift can reach them.

Your legal duties when you sell pallets

  • Duty of care. Hand your pallets only to someone authorised to take it. Check the collector on the Environment Agency public register of waste carriers before the first collection; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland keep their own registers.
  • A transfer note for every load, on paper or as a PDF, or one annual note for regular collections of the same material from the same site. Keep it for two years. What a waste transfer note must include.
  • Carrying it yourself. If you take your own business waste to a buyer, register first as a lower tier waste carrier. It is free. Who needs a waste carrier licence.
  • Separation at work. In England, workplaces must keep dry recyclables (glass, metal, plastic, paper and card) and food waste apart from general waste for collection, with paper and card collected separately from the other dry recyclables unless your collector agrees otherwise. Businesses with fewer than 10 employees have until 31 March 2027. The Simpler Recycling rules.
  • Pallets that leave your site as waste need a registered carrier and a transfer note like any other waste; pallets sold for reuse as pallets do not.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own versions of these rules. This is a plain English summary, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Who buys used pallets?

Pallet recyclers and repairers, who resell sound pallets and repair the rest, and some pallet pooling companies for their own stamped pallets. Our directory lists UK companies that collect or buy wood and pallets, and the form above puts yours in front of them.

Are broken pallets worth anything?

Repairable ones are usually collected free, because the recycler earns on the repaired pallet. Pallets fit only for chipping are collected for a charge, though usually a lower one than general waste. Keep the two apart and say which you have.

What is an EPAL pallet?

A Euro pallet made and repaired under the EPAL licence, 1200 by 800 mm, stamped on the blocks. It is the standard pallet across Europe and the one that holds its value best.

How many pallets make a collection worthwhile?

A collector usually wants a lorry load or a regular round. A hundred or so sound pallets, or a steady weekly supply, is what most will set up for; smaller one off piles are collected by local firms.

Is it really free to list here?
