Pallet collars: turning a pallet into a reusable box

A pallet collar is a hinged wooden frame that drops onto a pallet and turns it into a box. Stack two and it is a deeper box. Fold them flat and they take almost no room on the return journey, which is the whole idea.
Pallet collars: key facts
| What it is | A hinged timber frame that sits on a pallet to form walls |
|---|---|
| Common sizes | 1200 x 800 mm to suit a Euro pallet, 1200 x 1000 mm for a UK standard pallet |
| Stackable | Yes. Add collars to increase the height of the box |
| Return journey | Hinges let them fold flat, so empties take little space |
| What they replace | Cardboard outer cases, stretch wrap, and in some cases one-way crates |
| Where they sit in law | Reusable packaging ranks above recycling in the waste hierarchy |
How they work
A collar is four timber planks joined with metal hinges at the corners. It drops over the top of a loaded pallet so the pallet becomes the base and the collar becomes the walls. A lid, or simply another pallet on top, closes it.
Two things make them useful rather than merely clever. First, they stack: one collar gives you a shallow box, three give you a deep one, so the same components handle a half pallet of heavy parts and a full pallet of light goods. Second, the hinges let them collapse flat, so a return load of empty collars takes a fraction of the space rigid crates would.
Sizes follow pallet sizes. 1200 x 800 mm matches a Euro pallet and 1200 x 1000 mm matches the UK standard, and getting this wrong is the commonest ordering mistake, because the two look similar stacked in a yard.
Where they earn their place
- Loose or awkward goods that will not stack: castings, fittings, mouldings, components, produce.
- Closed loops. Anywhere goods travel between two sites you control, or between you and a regular supplier, so the empties come back.
- Businesses cutting single-use packaging. A collar replaces cardboard outers and a great deal of stretch wrap, and keeps replacing them for years.
- Mixed picking. A collared pallet is a bin you can pick out of, which cardboard outers are not.
- Storage as well as transport. Collared pallets stack in a way loose goods on a bare pallet do not.
Where they do not work is one-way shipping to customers who will not return them. At that point you have paid for reusable packaging and used it once, which is worse than cardboard on both cost and environmental grounds.
The reuse argument, which is also a legal one
The waste hierarchy in England and Wales runs prevention, preparing for re-use, recycling, other recovery, then disposal, and businesses transferring waste must take reasonable measures to apply it as a priority order. That is a legal duty under regulation 12 of the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011, and the transfer note has to confirm you have discharged it.
Reusable packaging sits near the top of that order, above recycling. So switching from single-use cardboard outers to collars is not merely a cost decision; it is the kind of change that evidences the hierarchy duty. If you are being asked by a customer for packaging data or by an auditor for hierarchy evidence, it is a straightforward thing to point at.
Practical cautions
Hinges are the weak point. They take the abuse and they are what fails. Ask whether replacement hinges are available and whether collars can be repaired, because a repairable collar lasts much longer.
Weight. Timber collars are heavier than cardboard, which matters if you pay for freight by weight or if staff lift them manually.
Export. Collars are wood packaging material, so if they are going between Great Britain and the EU they need to comply with ISPM 15 just as pallets do. Check the treatment mark before loading.
End of life. They are timber, so when they finally break up they go the same way as pallets. Our guide to pallet collection covers that, and our directory lists companies collecting wood and pallets by postcode.
Frequently asked questions
What size pallet collars do I need?
Match them to your pallets: 1200 x 800 mm for a Euro pallet, 1200 x 1000 mm for the UK standard pallet. Ordering the wrong one is the commonest mistake, because the two look similar stacked in a yard.
Can you stack pallet collars?
Yes, that is the main advantage. One collar gives a shallow box and three give a deep one, so the same components handle heavy parts and bulky light goods.
Are pallet collars better than cardboard?
In a closed loop where empties come back, yes: they replace cardboard outers and stretch wrap and keep doing so for years. For one-way shipping to customers who will not return them, they are worse on both cost and environmental grounds.
Do pallet collars need ISPM 15 treatment for export?
Yes. Collars are wood packaging material, so moving between Great Britain and the EU they must comply with ISPM 15 just as pallets do. Check the treatment mark before loading.
What usually fails first on a pallet collar?
The hinges, since they take the abuse. Ask whether replacement hinges are available and whether the collars can be repaired, because a repairable collar lasts considerably longer.
